Bali: For the first time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia and Ethiopia convened the Bilateral Consultative Forum (BCF) in Bali. The Forum was co-chaired by the Director General of Asia-Pacific and Africa Affairs of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Desra Percaya and Director General of Asia and Oceania of the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tsegab Kebebew.(9/4)

“The first BCF between Indonesia and Ethiopia is the implementation of the two Foreign Ministers' MoU in January 2015, which aims at discussing the issues of common concern to enhance the bilateral cooperation," said Desra Percaya.

In the political sector, both sides note the increasing exchange of visits since the establishment of Ethiopian Embassy in Jakarta in 2016. Furthermore, both countries encourage the exchange of high officials' visits and agree to expedite the finalization of the Agreement of Visa Exemption for Diplomatic and Official Passport Holders.

Given that the trade between Indonesia-Ethiopia is decreasing, both countries agreed to encourage the increase of trade and explore cooperation in strategic industries. Both parties also appreciate the progress in the plan to open the first direct flight between Indonesia and Africa by Ethiopian Airlines flight to Jakarta in 2018. The flight is expected to increase connectivity between Indonesia-Ethiopia and Africa in general.

In socio-cultural field, both sides agreed to enhance education and human resources development cooperation, including the finalization of the MoU between the Centre for Education and Training of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia and the Foreign Service Training Institute of Ethiopia.

Indonesia iterates that African peace and security is one of its priorities. This is evident in Indonesia's contribution to the UN peacekeeping missions in African region.

Ethiopia appreciates Indonesia's support in ensuring sustainable peace in Africa and convey its support for Indonesia's candidacy as the non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2019-2020.

The BCF was held a day prior to the Indonesia-Africa Forum, 10-11 April 2018 in Nusa Dua, Bali. Ethiopia is scheduled to host the next BCF. (Source: MoFA RI)
